Lines & Cubes

The first lesson in the Drawing Studies course focussed on the very basics of architectural drawing. First, we were taught to draw straight lines free-handed, from the shoulder. After practicing this, we moved on to using lines to produce the most basic shape: a cube. In the drawings below, I practiced making cubes in different positions and orientations to understand how to display shapes in space on paper.

TS1.1 Line Exercise

First exercise to practice drawing straight lines from free-hand

TS1.1 Cubes from Lines

Exercise to construct cubes from perspective lines and understand how perspective morphs shapes

TS1.1 Cubes Exercise

Exercise to practice arranging cubes near each other in the same scene and match perspective

One-Point Perspective

The second lesson focussed on one-point perspective, as well as learning how to represent depth and scale. This included several drawings where I had to replicate a scene from real life, and one exercise of a fictional scene where I had to draw without a reference.

TS1.2 Hall Drawing

Exercise to make a perspective drawing from real-life observation (hall in the BK building)

TS1.2 Outside Drawing

Exercise to make a perspective drawing from real-life observation (outside of the Model Hall of BK)

TS1.2 Fictional Cityscape

Exercise to practice one-point perspective by drawing a fictional cityscape

Two-Point Perspective & Compound Shapes

The third lesson was themed around two-point perspective and constructing compound shapes. This meant adding and subtracting cuboids and diagonal shapes from each other to create new volumes. Also discussed was the concept of shading.

TS1.3 Compound Orthogonal Shapes

Practice drawing compound orthogonal shapes

TS1.3 Composition #2

Exercise to practice constructing and shading compound shapes with diagonals

TS1.3 Composition #3

Second exercise to practice constructing and shading compound shapes from different angles

Contextualizing

The last lesson of the first course started to transition from abstract shapes to architectural drawings. We learned more about how to give compositions a sense of scale, as well as placing them in a context using objects such as people, vegetation, and other items with a comprehendible scale.

TS1.4 Facades

Converting a cuboid composition into a 'building' with visible scale

TS1.4 Eye Height

Exercise to show a composition with context and scale at eye level

TS1.4 Bird's Eye

Second exercise to practice converting eye-level drawings to bird's-eye views

Dummy Sketches

This is a series of quick, 10-minute drawings I made as homework assignments for every class. They are copies from a selection of images I received every week.
